The New Testament includes two ancestry lists tracing Jesus’s family history. More than a list of names, these genealogies show God’s faithfulness to work through the broken, difficult, and beautiful aspects of human life from generation to generation. In this reading plan, we’ll read together the story of Jesus’s physical, human lineage. We’ll also discover a deeper connection beyond family bonds: the story of a God who is at work to bring people from all places to share in His spiritual family.

Through the stories of real people and the pain and celebration they experienced, this five-week reading plan explores the lineage Jesus came from. With God's heart for His people and Jesus's family history in view, our reading plan points us toward the gospel reality that we are planted forever in the family of God.

For all those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. Instead, you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!” The Spirit himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children, and if children, also heirs—heirs of God and coheirs with Christ—if indeed we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. —Romans 8:14–17
